Romania is a country overflowing with culture and tradition, and that in the last years has been in the spotlight due to its film production.
Romanian cinema has earned a place in the film festivals worldwide achieving an international projection. The production quality is better every time and they have really sparked an interest in people around the globe.
However, there´s an interesting fact that caught our attention in Moneytrans… Did you know Romania is one of the countries with the least amount of movie theatres? Official figures confirm that there are only 65 viewing screens all over the country and that it´s one of the places where there´s hardly any consumption in the movie industry.
Luckily for the international viewers, Romanian cinema has been able to cross borders, even consolidating itself during the 2000s with works like The Death of Mr. Lazarescu by Cristi Puiu (winner of the Cannes festival in 2005) or 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 days, a film directed by Cristina Mungiu and winner of Palme d’Or in the Cannes Film Festival in 2007
Since this decade, Romanian cinema has contributed high quality films that have been acclaimed by both the critics and the general public, they´re all part of what is now known as the Romanian ¨New Wave¨.
For this and other reasons, we didn´t want to miss the opportunity to smile at Romanian cinema and recommend a selection of movies approved by the critics. ENJOY!!!
1. ¨THE DEATH OF MR. LAZARESCU¨ BY CRISTI PUIU (2005)
Like we mentioned earlier, this dramatic comedy that criticizes the public health care system won the Un Certain Regard award in the Cannes Film Festival. Without a doubt, it´s one of the masterpieces of Romanian cinema that we recommend 100%
2. ¨12:08 EAST OF BUCHAREST¨ BY CORNELIU PORUMBOIU (2006)
A great film awarded in Cannes 2006 with some of the best reviews by the general public as well as critics. It´s a film that takes us on a journey to the country´s past, using satire to do so.
3. ¨4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS, AND 2 DAYS¨ BY CRISTIAN MUNGIU (2007)
This film meant the consolidation of Romanian cinema at an international scale, earning the Camera d´Or award in Cannes, the Best European Film in Los Goya, different nominations at the Golden Globes and a long well deserved etcetera of awards and nominations. We were captivated… Are you up for it?
4. ¨POLICE, ADJECTIVE.¨ BY CORNELIU PORUMBOIU (2009)
The winner of several awards, such as the Un Certain Regard awarded by the jury in Cannes, it´s a political drama that tells the story of a policeman and a boy who makes a drug related mistake. For us it´s a MUST!
5. ¨MORGEN¨, BY MARIAN CRISAN (2010)
This movie was chosen to represent Romania in the Oscars in 2010. The film tells the story of a friendship between a Romanian and a Turk, revealing the conflict and drama that comes with the immigration in Europe.
